We've been designing for Royal Mail for many years designing first day covers, stamp presentation packs, the stamp bulletin supplement (for collectors), rubber hand stamps and even the identity for a major stamp expo.
The Royal Mail kindly asked to design a First Day Cover and Presentation Pack for ten Special Stamps featuring ‘Britons of Distinction’. The people who featured were hugely diverse; from Sir Basil Spence, architect of Coventry Cathedral to Alan Turing, mathematician and computer scientist, who devised the Bombe code-breaking machine in WWII.
We chose to glue a somewhat eclectic mix of individuals together using textures and symbolism that were redolent of the concept of ‘distinguished’. We were conscious that no one person should take precedence over another. We kept colour tones suitably muted to evoke a bygone era and complement the beautifully designed stamps.
We also designed two hand stamps to accompany the different issues. One uses a graphical representation of Coventry Cathedral and the other shows a beautifully designed Gothic pattern by Pugin.
